A: Whole cell currents were evoked by voltage steps from -50 mV to +30 mV (with a holding potential of -80 mV). The extracellular solution consisted of (in mM): 140 NaCl, 2.8 KCl, 1.0 MgCl2, 10 HEPES, 10 glucose, pH 7.4 with 100 m M CaCl2, and the pipet solution consisted of (in mM): 140 KCl, 2 MgCl2, 1.1 EGTA, 0.1 CaCl2, 5 HEPES, and 5 K2-ATP. B: Multiple single channel currents (arrows denote each channel level) recorded from an excised inside out patch of a fluorescing COS-7 cell. Currents of about 16 pA were evoked (solutions were the same as above, with a holding potential of +40 mV).
